Abstract

The dynamic nature of modern society has brought about the widespread use and abuse of various drugs, ranging from medically prescribed substances to illicit narcotics. Within the framework of Islamic jurisprudence (Sharia), the regulation of such substances necessitates a careful balance between preserving life, protecting intellect, and preventing harm. Rooted in the Qur’an and Sunnah, Sharia offers a comprehensive moral and legal structure through which the permissibility, prohibition, and conditional usage of modern drugs can be evaluated. This analysis explores key categories of contemporary drugs—including recreational, pharmaceutical, and psychoactive substances—while examining their rulings through established principles of Islamic law such as maslahah (public interest), darurah (necessity), and sadd al-dhara’i (blocking the means to harm). Despite the clarity of foundational objectives in Sharia, the application of these rulings to modern drugs is often misunderstood or oversimplified. Without nuanced understanding of medical, psychological, and societal contexts, legal verdicts risk either undue permissiveness or excessive rigidity. Furthermore, the growing prevalence of drug misuse in Muslim communities underscores the urgent need for a faith-informed approach that integrates legal scholarship, healthcare insights, and community engagement. Ultimately, the study of modern-day drugs through a Sharia lens emphasizes not only the preservation of individual health and moral integrity but also the safeguarding of collective well-being. By engaging with classical and contemporary juristic discourse, believers and scholars alike can develop informed, context-sensitive responses that uphold the ethical and spiritual objectives of Islam in the face of evolving challenges.
