Abstract

The construction sites are by their nature risky locations and thus there is a need to have proper safety management to safeguard the workers and project quality. Even though there are laid down standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safety rules, their adherence is irregular in Pakistan due to the constraint in the budget and enforcement, as well as, unethical practices. This paper focuses on the existing safety measures, laws, and on-site safety equipment used in Pakistani construction sector and determines the main issues and gaps in their implementation. It considers the wearing of personal protective equipment (PPE), safety gadgets and monitoring technology, and practical implementation of the applicable laws and standards. The study shows the impact of failure to comply, which comprise accidents, finances, and poor construction quality. It further highlights the contribution of project managers, supervisors, and workers towards developing a safety culture. Through analysis of legislation, tools and processes, the study demonstrates that more rigorous enforcement, improved training and the use of cutting-edge safety technologies are needed to increase the safety of construction sites and project overall success in Pakistan.
