Abstract

The current research focused on the application of smartphone technology in improving academic functions, administrative activities, skill development, and the social and family consequences of the use of smart phone technology by teachers of the secondary schools within the District Faisalabad. The research design employed was quantitative whereby a sample of 119 teachers sampled by simple random sampling out of a population of 300 was used to generate data. To collect data on smartphone use in academic and learning tasks, administrative work, skill training, and its perceived positive and negative effects, a validated and structured questionnaire was used to gather the data. Descriptive analysis showed that teachers consider smartphones to be very useful to perform such fundamental academic tasks as checking mails, schedule management, online information retrieval, and facilitating communication. Smartphones proved to be most useful in administrative activities but not in logistical and infrastructural activities due to feedback, consultation, notifications, and sharing of information. The results also show that smartphones play an important role in skill development especially regarding administrative work, communication with parents, subject knowledge, time management and management in classroom. Correlation analysis revealed positive strong relations between academic and learning smart phone usage, skill building, and positive effects and negative effects were more correlated to social life and family interaction. The multiple regression analysis proved that the use of smartphones in academic and learning processes and the perceived positive effects are significant predictors of the development of skills in teachers (R2 = 0.77, F = 36.45, p < 0.001). In general, the research finds that smartphones present a useful instrument in promoting teaching and learning as well as professional skills when used in a purposive way but when used egocentrically; they can have an adverse effect on social and family life. The research suggests organized implementation of smartphones in learning and administrative activities, educating teachers to engage in efficient smartphone use, encouraging academic-oriented smartphone learning, responsible use, and research to investigate the possible long-term impacts on educational, social, and psychological results.
