Translatability And Untranslatability. A Linguistic And Cultural Analysis

Abstract

The aim of this study is to explore the idea of translatability and untranslatability between English and Urdu. The research looks at how some words, idioms, and cultural expressions can be translated easily, while others lose their meaning or cannot be translated at all. The study is qualitative, descriptive, and comparative. It focuses on examples from English and Urdu to show how language and culture affect translation. The research does not use numerical data or statistics but instead explains the meaning and challenges through analysis. The study analyzes English–Urdu translation challenges using examples of idioms, proverbs, and cultural expressions drawn from the book “Basic English Urdu Grammar: Grammar for Beginners.” The study found that many English words and expressions can be translated into Urdu without much change, showing translatability. However, culture-specific words, idioms, and metaphors often create problems because they carry unique cultural meanings. For example, some English idioms cannot be directly translated into Urdu, and translators need to use explanations or alternatives. This shows the presence of untranslatability in certain cases. The study is limited to English and Urdu languages only. It mainly discusses idioms, proverbs, and cultural expressions and does not cover technical or scientific translations. Also, because the research is qualitative, it is based on selected examples and not on a large dataset. The study concludes that both translatability and untranslatability exist side by side in English and Urdu translation. While many expressions can be translated, others resist translation due to cultural and linguistic differences. This highlights the importance of cultural awareness and creativity in translational work.
